Our Story: Two Worlds, One Destination

It all started with a shared belief: as Sealy grows, it deserves a locally-owned anchor where you can feel proud to bring your family. We spent over two years restoring the soul of this 100-year-old building at 222 & 224 Fowlkes St., stripping back layers to reveal the original brickwork that now frames our dining room and bar.

The 1879 is the result of years of hospitality experience coming home. We’ve combined nearly 40 years of industry knowledge with a commitment to serving the Sealy community. We aren't just a restaurant; we’re a piece of Sealy’s history, reimagined for its future.

Our goal was simple: create two distinct experiences under one roof. A warm, inviting Italian restaurant for your comfort food classics, and a laid-back pub for the local community to gather, watch the game, and be social.

Meet the Team

  • Steve Brown

    Founder & The Industry Veteran

    Steve has been a fixture in the Texas hospitality scene since he started bussing tables in 1987. With over three decades of experience and as the founder of the beloved Social Pub and Grill and Social Sports Pub in Katy, Steve brings a "neighborhood first" philosophy to The 1879. He believes that great service and a place where "everyone knows your name" are just as important as what’s on the plate.

  • Melissa Jones

    Front of House Operations Director

    Melissa is the engine behind our guest experience. As the Front of House Operations Director, she ensures that every visitor feels like a "regular" from the moment they walk through our doors. Her focus is on seamless service, whether you’re joining us for a quiet "Sunday Dinner" or a high-energy night in the pub.

  • Julio Velasquez

    Head Chef | General Manager

    Julio brings a world-class operational background to our kitchen. Having served as a Director of Operations for First Watch, he knows how to run a high-standard, efficient house. Julio’s history with Steve goes back to the very beginning—he was part of the original team that launched the first Social Pub and Grill. Now, he’s leading the charge at The 1879, focusing on handmade Italian comfort and elevated pub classics.

In the Restaurant, we focus on Italian comfort classics. The kind of slow-simmered sauces, handmade textures, and savory flavors that invite you to slow down and stay a while. It’s "Sunday Dinner" every night of the week.

On the Pub side, we lean into our Texas roots. This is where the grill comes out to play, adding a hint of smoke to our steaks and elevated pub favorites. It’s the perfect partner to a cold beer, a game on the big screen, and a local crowd that feels like family.
